Salkantay & Humantay glaciers, Peru (2009)

First stop on the Cape Farewell tour was the top of the Andes, specifically 4500 m up at the base of the Salkantay and Humantay glaciers. It was literally breath-taking.

On the drive up we passed by a tree barely clinging on to a corner of earth.

This area was relatively level and where we set up camp.

The first day we just had a few hours left after we arrived and set up camp so we went on a little walk near the glaciers.

Salkantay.

Looks windy up there.

Kathryn and I take some measurements.

One more view.

Walking back to camp before it gets dark.

The next morning people were in good spirits even though it was freezing at night.

We set off on an all day hike to find a glacial lake.

Winding around the mountain contours.

It’s amazing that these animals climb this high (and by “these animals” I mean us).

And finally over one more ridge the lake appeared.

Lake scene.

Definitely photo-worthy.

Anthony’s nifty make-shift 3-D camera set-up. It resembles two eyes that produce stereoscopic images from the combination of 2 slightly off-set images of the same scene.

These guys stopped by for a drink.

Other bits of life.

After everyone had arrived, we sat around talking about climate change.

It was an exhausting enough day that 2 apples made for a great pillow.

On the drive back down our van stopped to wait for the other van to catch up. Hannah is not pleased with their slowness.

To pass the time she played a dangerous jumping game with the local kids. Later, Adrianne showed off her gymnastics background, and immediately became a legendary goddess to the kids.
