Bettmeralp, Switzerland (2008)

I had a meeting in the Swiss Alps with everyone from Oxford, Edinburgh, St Andrews, and Wake Forest working on our Peruvian Andes project.  I didn’t bring my camera so these photos are compiled from other people’s photos (Steven, Marjan), but I had tons of fun. It was a great time of socializing with my colleagues as well as good research discussions and plans for future work.

We were situated literally up a ski slope so it was very steep with great views, including the Matterhorn (ah Disneyland, is there nothing you can’t teach me about the world?).

Music of the day, the Swiss cows clanking their bells.

Bettmeralp high street with Patrick, Michael, Rosa, Anna, and Aline.

The Schraglift from our downslope houses to the meeting place. For some reason, we continued to mispronounce the transportation as Shag-lift.  Huh huh huh (yes, we are very mature).

Marjan talks about photosynthesis.

We took a hike into the mountains in search of the glacier.

The slope was steep and the air thin, but this was nothing to what we faced in the Andes.

Things are looking up for us.

Fish in the Alps? Who knew!

There was this weird ice tunnel connecting one face of the mountain to another.

Overlooking the glacier.

A nice spot to eat lunch.

Lots of these rock formations scattered throughout the trails placed here by mysterious ancient tourists of the past.

Ancient tourist of the very recent past in the distance.

The glacier of Bettmeralp. The slogan everywhere was “Bettmeralp: The better Alp”. But, nearby was Fischeralp, which I would argue is the better Alp.

The retreating tracks of the glacier.

Looking down at the cafeteria/bar where we would stop for a beer.

I was not pleased with the amount of head in this beer.

Us being silly on the way down from the glacier.

Whoa, we suddenly lost gravity!

The sunset from Bettmeralp.

It massively snowed for a few hours, but no matter, there was plenty to do indoors…

Party!

Patrick and his harem.

Dance til the wee hours.

Pretending to do science at the party.

Fun with the photo editing software.

On the last day there were a few of us left, so we went for another hike.

More nice vistas.

Weird scientists growing from the rocks.

Rock moss.

Nice view.

Final group shot!
