Melbourne, Australia (2008, 2009)

We wanted to go to Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef next after Kangaroo Island, but there were massive storms going on up there.  We called an audible and instead visited Melbourne for a couple days.  We stayed with Carmel’s cousin, Yael, and visited the easily-walkable CBD quite often.

2009: I found myself back in Melbourne for 1.5 weeks for a few meetings/conferences (Pics contributed by Ella & Sachin).

Federation Square in the heart of the city.

The wild architecture of the Atrium.

The Atrium lit up in different colors at night.  It also played sound-effects inside that made it sound like the building was cracking and falling apart.  Carmel and I were not fans of that.

Historic church across from Super Mario Bros exhibit.

Yummy Chinatown for dinner.

Carmel with Yael and Moshe.

The second day we walked through the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The gardens were on water restrictions and the plants were suffering.

The ponds were drying out.

Lovely gardens to walk around.

Some blooming flowers.

A memorial at the gardens for war veterans.  Yeah, we didn’t realize Australia had been in wars either.

We visited the gaol (jail) that held Ned Kelly, infamous Robin Hood felon of Australian history.

It’s all about small cells these days.

This powerful guard seems to have shoes similar to Carmel’s.

Ned Kelly on holiday.

We made a quick stop at the Melbourne Museum.

For a last snack before heading to Sydney, we went to Lygon Street, which was full of amazing Italian food and gelato.  I got a freshly made passionfruit gelato that was incredible.

2009

The first of the meetings was an early career workshop (which was the funding that brought me out to Melbourne), and I had to chair a number of the talks. The best part about it was making new friends that I hung out with during the whole rest of the conference.

It was also really good to hang out with the top Australian researchers in my field, who dedicated a lot of their time to the workshop.

Dinner one night involved 15 of us squishing around a small table. Because we are nerdy scientists, the laptops busted out eventually.

We had a little outing to the Melbourne Zoo.

Here’s a view from the main conference.

The beautiful, clean, artistic, modern skyline of Melbourne’s central business district (CBD).

Walking back along the picturesque river.

Conference dinner. I sat with my Ph.D. supervisor and it was good to catch up with him.

There was dancing and a really great jazz band. Colin, (in plaid on the left), who is the funder of my funder (super-funder), singled me out to dance with his wife.

We stopped off at a wildlife park where we saw a really cool bird show.

Neat shot taken by Ella.

Ella found true love with this little guy here.

Cutest thing ever. Koala with her baby.
