Montreal, Canada (2005)

I went to Canada for the Ecological Society of America conference last week. It’s a lot more French than I had expected. Practically everyone speaks French as a first language, and many have trouble with English. All the signs, TV, radio, etc. are in French. The people are tall too. The city was nice and varied, and I only saw one cop the entire time there. I stayed at a nice hotel by McGill University.

Here is a view from my hotel.

There was a lot of interesting art around the city.

The conference center had colorful windows.

I went to the conference by myself, but I ended up seeing all these people I knew either from Berkeley, through academic correspondence, or from other conferences. I hung out with Rafa a bunch.

The research presented at the conference was interesting and made me think about my own research a lot. There was a cool session on wireless sensors that included a presentation on sensors attached to seals and whales where we were shown their movements around and through the depths of the ocean, around the Arctic Circle, and all the data of the profiles of the ocean (temperature, salinity, etc.) collected from the sensors. I also found out that one of manuscripts got accepted for publication!
