Split, Croatia (2007)

Gerry flew to England to visit us and she wanted to go to Croatia so we went.

We were told that Split was unimpressive but we had a great time wandering around the palace, which, unlike most palaces, was completely occupied and a normal part of modern life.

People live in these centuries-old walls.

Wandering the streets.

People getting married at the end of one street.

Busy fish market.

Empty “castle” courtyard.

Left: Warm and sunny Croatia.  Right: Raindrops on train window the day I left England.

These pretty flowers were all over Croatia.  So were the purple things.

Lovely music just around the corner.

I like this door.

Looking up at the clock tower.

Looking down from the clock tower.

The tower stairwell was a bit short and narrow.

Hold on Gerry!

Different view.

The same view as seen from a mini replica of the city.

This building was fun to stand in the middle of and spin around while looking up.

Another view.

The sea to my back.

A mountain range surrounds the other sides of the city.

A main plaza.

Romans and Venice controlled a lot of Croatia throughout history.

“People of Croatia!  I am looking for 2 fugitive females from the not-yet-discovered USA!”

Fugitives caught.

This bank is a great juxtaposition of modern and ancient.

Here is the city replica as a whole.  Carmel points to where we stayed.

Our apartment.

We stayed near this dude, who gave you good luck if you touched his giant feet.

See, giant.

Gerry kisses the toe for extra good luck.

I was getting toe-envy.

We felt much more enormous next to the mini dude.

Who has the giant toe now, huh?

It wouldn’t be Split without a picture of a banana…split.

I liked this place because I could steal their wireless internet.

Cleocatra.
